Independent internationalization through ecommerce is an increasingly important alternative for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) within the global trade. This eBay Public Policy Lab paper looks at online commerce platforms as a powerful economic and business growth tool for MSMEs to succeed in global trade. Unlike accessing foreign markets via export firms limited in geographical scope or as part of Global Value Chains that tend to be dependent on large Multinational Enterprises, the platform-based online commerce models open up significant new growth and competitiveness opportunities. The study analyzes data from the recent economic crisis in Europe that highlights the ability of all classes of online commercial enterprises to adapt to macroeconomic changes and market shocks, build and rebalance their export destinations and grow rapidly. This is especially true for MSMEs who may otherwise lack the in-house experience, expertise and resources to expand and sell to new regions of the world.
