Accelerating SME Trade in Asia-Pacific: De Minimis Plurilateral

Founder and CEO of Nextrade Group and Business 4 eTrade Development Co-Founder Dr. Suominen calls in this presentation for raising the threshold for de minimis, or the maximum value of an import that is exempt from customs duties and complicated rules of origin, as a means to accelerate SME trade in the Asia-Pacific region. The stance of many world governments that higher de minimis levels would mean less revenue and SME exports and bring the wrath from domestic retailers is not only continuously debunked by trade economists, it is also deeply outdated for the digital economy and ecommerce industry of today. Accelerating SME Trade in Asia-Pacific quantifies SMEs’ challenges with customs and tariffs in ecommerce and provides a cost and benefit analysis to support the case for higher de minimis. Morever, it includes concrete steps and recommendations to create a De Minimis Plurilateral pilot programs for willing countries.
